Europe Boosts Earth Observation Prowess with Joint ESA-EDA Study

The European Space Agency (ESA) and the European Defence Agency (EDA) have initiated a joint study aimed at identifying strategic and technological gaps in Europe’s Earth observation capabilities. This initiative, announced on April 22, 2026, will also focus on developing a long-term roadmap to bolster security and defence.

The collaborative effort seeks to pinpoint vulnerabilities and outline concrete actions for building a resilient Earth observation infrastructure capable of addressing future threats. The study is expected to explore the integration of cutting-edge technologies and the optimization of existing observation systems.

Through this partnership, ESA and EDA intend to enhance Europe’s space-based capacities, ensuring they can effectively adapt to evolving security landscapes and support more informed decision-making.
