Anthropic’s Claude Fable Blocks Basic Biology Queries to Thwart Potential Bioweapon Misuse

To guard against the creation of biological weapons, Anthropic has implemented “overly conservative” safeguards in its Fable AI model that block the majority of queries tied to biological work. As reported by The Verge, these restrictions are designed to prevent the AI from being exploited to synthesize dangerous pathogens or facilitate bioterrorism.

Because the safety filters are set so strictly, the system often refuses to answer even benign or fundamental biology questions. Anthropic acknowledges that while this might frustrate legitimate researchers, the priority remains mitigating catastrophic risks that could arise from large language models providing specialized scientific knowledge to bad actors.

This move highlights the ongoing tension in the AI industry between utility and safety. As models become more capable, companies like Anthropic are choosing to err on the side of caution, even if it means significantly limiting the model’s helpfulness in scientific domains.
