MIT’s FloatForm: Tiny Aquatic Robots Snap Together Like Ants to Build Bases
Inspired by the way ants lock their bodies together to form living rafts, MIT researchers have developed “FloatForm,” a swarm of small aquatic robots capable of assembling into reconfigurable structures. These individual units can autonomously snap together on the water’s surface, creating stable platforms or bridges that adapt to their environment.
Each robot in the FloatForm swarm operates with simple local rules, yet together they can manifest complex, large-scale architectures. This modularity allows the system to be highly resilient; if one part of the structure is damaged or no longer needed, the robots can disconnect and reform into a new shape, making it ideal for dynamic maritime environments.
The potential applications for this technology are vast, ranging from rapid emergency response in flood zones to the creation of temporary floating docks. By mimicking biological collective intelligence, the MIT team has opened new possibilities for autonomous, scalable infrastructure on the water.
