The Internet Archive has released a comprehensive report following the National Summit on Local News Preservation, held on June 17, 2026, in National Harbor, Maryland.
Organized through the ‘Today’s News for Tomorrow’ (TNT) initiative in partnership with the Poynter Institute and Investigative Reporters and Editors (IRE), and supported by Press Forward and the Society of American Archivists Foundation, the summit convened journalists, librarians, archivists, and researchers. Attendees collaborated to establish critical recommendations and sustainable frameworks to safeguard at-risk local journalism and community records against digital obsolescence.
🌌 Deep Perspective
The shift to ephemeral digital mediums creates an unprecedented vulnerability for human collective memory, risking a ‘digital dark age’ for local histories. Whether historians 100 or 1,000 years from now can reconstruct the grassroots realities of 21st-century society depends entirely on today’s institutional commitment to decentralized, systematic news archiving.
